Computational Models of Humans

Every important outcome begins with a human decision. To shape outcomes well, we have to understand why those decisions are made.

Today's AI has transformed how machines process language and recognize patterns, yet it still has only a limited understanding of why people think, decide, and behave as they do. Most approaches learn what people did from historical data and project it forward. That works until the world changes, and the world always changes.

Understanding, not only prediction

Science has spent more than a century studying how people actually decide. At Heura Lab, we bring this knowledge into computational models. Rather than treating people as patterns in data, we model the drivers behind their choices. This lets us:

• Represent individuals with fidelity, not just averages.
• Predict the sub-populations whose decisions matter most and are hardest to see in aggregate data.
• Explore meaningful what-ifs, and identify the interventions that lead to better outcomes.
• Generalize to new situations where no historical data exists, and learn more from less data.

Why the WHY matters

We believe understanding the WHY is the foundation of trust. A prediction without a reason asks you to take it on faith. An explanation lets you see for yourself, challenge it, and act with confidence.

Understanding people also carries responsibility. We study human behavior to understand people more deeply, never to manipulate them, and to help people make better decisions and flourish.

From decisions to interactions to societies

Today we simulate aircraft before they fly and molecules before they are synthesized. We believe organizations will one day simulate important human decisions before acting in the real world.

But people rarely decide alone. We cannot simulate human interaction without deeply understanding humans, and we cannot simulate society without understanding the people who make it up. Models grounded in the drivers of behavior can scale from the individual to markets and society, and to the AI agents and robots that will work alongside us.

We believe computational human models may become as fundamental to understanding human systems as physical models are to engineering and biological models are to medicine.
